Private New Towns - A Promising Concept Saddled With an Old Problem

Private, mixed use, “new towns” developed in older urban areas, are a modern interpretation of the “company town” and a smart growth idea that embraces close-in, higher density development near public transit. The problem with the concept, however, is that long term maintenance and repair relies on private, rather than public, funding to maintain facilities that in traditional cities would be funded with city-wide property taxes.
