Why Opt For a Metal Roof?

February 27, 2009

Check out any modern houses in some towns and you will find a stark difference in them from the old houses. The old houses have a sweet and quaint look about them and one can spot them from afar. Nobody can actually point out where from these old buildings get their quaint looks from. Have you noticed their roofs? Most of these old buildings have tiled roofs whereas the new ones have metal roofs. Do these metal roofs actually make any difference and what is their advantage of the tiles roofs that have been used for decades?

People argue that the metal roofs are costlier to install and tougher to fix. With tiled roofs one needed to replace just a single or couple of tiles and `lo presto’ the roof was fixed, yet people are opting in for metal roofs. There has got to be an advantage of using these roofs. Maybe that is why more and more people are switching over to them. Let us take some time to find out the advantages of metal roofs. We were just talking about replacing parts of tiled roofs. Like it or not, but tiled roofs get damaged very easily. Basically they are made out of baked clay which is a porous material.

Water is bound to seep into these tiles and cause their decay. The entrapped water also weakens these clay tiles and eventually they start cracking and break down. A metal roof has no such problems and if I is treated properly with chemicals prior to installation and maintained properly, shall not rust. If there is a hailstorm, you can be rest assured that there are going to be many houses ending up with their clay tiles damaged while those with metal roofs will have no problems at all.

When the rain falls on the tiled roofs, the tile absorbs water and when the sun shines, the entrapped water evaporates. This process keeps on getting repeated and weakens the tiles which later on give way and break down. Those in favor of tiles roofs might argue that they provide a quaint and antique look to the house, a look that is pleasing to the eyes, but if they have to be replaced ever so often, the owner has to pay a huge sum to get them replaced. A task that is not financially possible for everyone. Metal roofs, on the other hand, generally last the lifetime of a building.

They are far more strong that their tiled counterparts and if they are treated properly with chemicals, they will by immune to water. Apart from that they are far easier to maintain. While the tiled roofs face severe damage during hailstorms, there has been no such reported cases of buildings that have metalled roofs. The best advantage is the low insurance premiums these metalled roofs attract. Since they are built to last many years, the insurance companies charge lower premiums from buildings that have metal roofs.

Got something to say?
